The Pedants' Society

Minutes of the Fourth Extraordinary General Meeting of 1893

Held at the Society's rooms, Bedford Square, on Tuesday, the 14th day of March, at 7.00 p.m.

Present: The President (Prof. Horatio Grimble), the Secretary (Mr Henry Loft), and twenty-three Fellows.

Apologies: Eight, of which four were noted by the Secretary as containing typographical errors. Of these, two were ruled by the Chair to be inadmissible. The matter is recorded.

Minutes of the previous meeting: Read. Disputed by Mr Crispian Feverstone (#00093) on the ground that the word "agreed" had been minuted where "concurred" was used. The Secretary's amendment was accepted on a show of hands; Mr Feverstone abstained, on principle.

Item 1. The Oxford Comma. The Chair invited Lady Henrietta Wrayford to introduce the motion. Lady Wrayford spoke for forty-one minutes. The Chair invited the seconder. The seconder declined to be the seconder, having since reconsidered, and proposed an amendment. The amendment was ruled out of order. The amendment's withdrawal was contested. The amendment was withdrawn. The seconder seconded. The Chair invited debate.

Item 1, continued. Debate. Mr Feverstone raised a point of order regarding the wording of the motion. The point was upheld. The motion was reworded. The reworded motion was put. Mr Feverstone raised a further point of order regarding the rewording. The point was upheld. The motion was reworded a second time. Mr Cassius Wrenfield observed that the second rewording reverted, in substance, to the first. The Chair concurred. The motion as twice-reworded was withdrawn.

Item 1, concluded. A revised motion, in the original wording, was put to the meeting. Carried, 12–11, with one abstention; the abstention being Mr Feverstone, on the ground that the Chair had failed, throughout, to use the Oxford comma in his rulings.

Item 2. The Resignation of Sixteen Fellows. Sixteen Fellows present rose and resigned. The Secretary declined to minute the names individually, on the ground that the resignations had not been submitted in writing; an objection from the floor on this point was sustained, and the names were minuted. (See Schedule A.)

Any Other Business. The Chair noted the time. The Chair noted the absence of further items. The Chair adjourned the meeting.

Date of next meeting: to be determined; the Society having, by the close of the meeting, only seven extant Fellows in the room.
